Cambs Walking Women Our new group has got off to a flying (or should that read stomping?) start. With advice from Ally, Perry and Nicolette, all of whom have organised walks in the past, we started in November with a six mile route from Wandlebury along the old Roman Road. Glorious sunshine, autumn-coloured beeches and rolling countryside made this a memorable start. Mary took a photo, at the beginning of the afternoon to inaugurate the group - although smiles were still on faces at the end of the walk too! Then off to Carol’s for tea and crumpets (yes, really!), as it grew dark. For our December event, we assembled at Wimpole Hall on another sunny, but colder morning, to walk seven miles across to Little and Great Evesden. This time, we took sandwiches and stopped for lunch en route, before heading back to the tea rooms at Wimpole for an end of day refuelling and chat. Our numbers had gone up from seven in November to ten in December, with three more women joining us for tea (after getting stuck in an horrific traffic delay on the M11). We couldn’t expect another fine day in January, could we? But on the mildest day so far in the month, with winter sunshine, twelve of us met at Wicken Fen for a six mile circular walk around the fenland fields and rivers. The pub at Wicken (appropriately the Maid’s Head) was our lunchtime stop, before the optional afternoon walk. Three women stayed on to join Carol in visiting the bird-watching hides, to see which birds came in to roost on the scrapes and reedbed as it grew dark. Of all the delights of that day, a bittern flying low over the reed at dusk was a rare and exciting experience for the last four intrepid walkers. What else to say about us? We are a friendly, open group of all ages; women travel from Cambs, Beds, Northants and London to join the walks. Carol keeps an email list for quick communication but we are planning to set up a ‘telephone tree’ as well. In time, we hope to organise one or two walking weekends, in addition to the monthly walks. |
