SPORTS
SisterAct football is a longstanding group with women of all ages and footballing abilities coming together to play the beautiful game.
We meet on a Friday evening and have a friendly game (5/6 or 7 aside) usually on an astroturf in or near Cambridge. The game usually lasts an hour and a half and we play regardless of the weather. The spirit is friendly and laughing plays a huge part of our game.
We have fielded many a team in competitions. Have played in Eurogaygames Stockholm and Rotterdam (no medals but lots of fun) and recently won a trophy at a local friendly tournament. We’re regulars at the Justin Fashanu cup and hosted our own national tournament in 2012.
We encourage new members to join us in our Friday football. We’re also keen members of the post game pub fixture which is as important to us as the football (although obviously not obligatory).
KNITTING & CROCHET
Details about the knitting and crochet club to follow shortly…
GARDENING & CAMPING CLUB
SisterAct Gardening and Camping Club offers you an invitation to enjoy the great outdoors and the small outdoors. If you’ve always wanted to get up close and personal to flowers, fruit and veg in the company of like-minded women then hold back no longer! No gardening knowledge or experience is required and in fact some of the most popular events seem to be those which involve food and not necessarily very much gardening or camping.
If you are already a gardener or would simply enjoy working in someone else’s garden then a working party day may be for you. So far we have shared garden designs and offered helpful (!) ideas on re-designing Jacqueline’s garden; designed and created a new border in Jenny’s patch and built raised vegetable beds in Helen’s garden. We usually meet for coffee to chat about the work ahead, do a bit of gardening, have a coffee to think about the work that needs doing and then share lunch to chat about the work that’s been done. There’s just something very convivial about working and eating together and it’s a great way of getting to know new people and to spend time with friends. It’s also a useful way of getting help and advice on any gardening problems you may be encountering:
For the more genteel there have been visits to Kew Garden, Anglesey Abbey, Beth Chatto’s Garden, the RHS Flower Show in Malvern. For the less genteel there has been swimming in the sea in Cornwall and traversing the gorge at the Eden Project via the longest and fastest Zip Line in England:
We have also explored small gardens and local village “Open Gardens” organised by the National Gardens Scheme and learnt about how to propagate cuttings in a workshop led by the knowledgeable and patient Sandra. Camping trips have included a very successful weekend in Kent with a visit to the gardens at Sissinghurst and a splendid BBQ:
There have been weekends in tents and campervans in Malvern and Norfolk and if camping is a step too far for you then B&B options are always available. We also enjoyed a stunningly sunny week in Cornwall staying on sites on the north and south coast with visits to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project and coastal walks:
Keep an eye on the events page in The SisterAct Newsletter for future events. The great outdoors and the small outdoors await you!
NEW MEMBERS EVENTS
All new women are very welcome to come to any of our events, but occasionally we host a specific occasion for new (and nearly new) members. These are very popular and will give you a chance to meet both and old new members in a safe and friendly environment.
CEILIDHS & PARTIES
SisterAct puts on regular social events – depending on the season and who’s organising it, this might be a fancy dress Halloween party, our ever popular Christmas disco, a Spring Ceilidh…
We usually have a big summer party of some sort – in previous years this has been either a picnic and games by the river, a BBQ hosted by a SA member with a big garden, a summer fete type event with a vegetable show, welly-wanging and obstacle races or just a big party with bring and share food and music.
Our Spring Ceilidhs over the last 2 year have been amazing fundraising events for a local charity for LGBT young people. The SA Christmas disco is a bit of an institution now…all women are welcome and they are well attended by new and old members. All of the events are organised by members for members so if you have any ideas for events you’d like to see happen and think others would like to attend, you could organise it or get a group of people together to help get something new going!
SUMMER BBQ/PICNIC
We usually have a big summer party of some sort – in previous years this has been either a picnic and games by the river, a BBQ hosted by a SA member with a big garden, a summer fete type event with a vegetable show, welly-wanging and obstacle races or just a big party with bring and share food and music.
BOOK CLUB
Book club is a monthly group discussion for SisterActers who like to share views, thoughts or opinions about a chosen book. Books are chosen by members and are advertised every six months or so, giving everyone a chance to read the current book. We meet at a member’s house and chat, the format is friendly and laid back. We try not to talk over each other and the only rule is that if you haven’t finished reading the book we don’t hold off discussing the end. Many snacks are eaten, people leave book club feeling that they’ve gained a different perspective on the book. It’s relaxed and far from high brow. The discussions are fun and inclusive and we often end up chatting about the book and everything else under the sun too.
